Faith, the Bergamasco Sheepdog, is heartworm positive
I was driving down the highway in East Texas when this dog came out of the wood. I got out of the car and tried to get close to the dog but I couldn't. It ran away to a house across the highway and I followed her. The dog went to hide under the porch. A man came out and I asked him if the dog was his and he said NO. He said it came to his house as a stray and he fed her sometimes. He also said she has been at his house for 2 years and was it by a car twice and recovered. He never took her to a vet and never gave her heartworm preventive. He told me he name the dog Sparky, thinking it was a boy and he found out she was a girl and kept the name. In 2 years, he said he could never get close to her at all. I decided to go feed her meat every day until I could catch her and take her to the vet and be shaved. It took a week and finally, Monday, June 29, 2009, I caught her. I managed to make her trust me enough to eat out of my hand. I sat with a book and let her feel safe next to me and I attempted to slip a collar around her neck. She let me and when I tried to make her walk toward the car, she started to fight me. She ran under the porch and stayed there. I crawled under the porch while talking to her. She didn't run away and I grabbed the collar again and pulled her from under the porch. She didn't appreciate that one bit but didn't growl or try to bite me. The man came out of his house and helped me put her in a crate and lift her up in the car. And it was the start of a new life....

Sparky was renamed Faith. We took her to the vet and the techs spent 3 hours taking blood, shaving her, pulling ticks out of her flesh. She was the best girl and very patient. Then she got a good bath and was shaved again. Yesterday, we found out Faith was heartworm positive and had Rocky Mountain fever. We expected that.

Faith is happy and affectionate, and she is starting to be interested in plush toys, playing with the other dogs and with humans. She is a very special girl, a fighter for life.

We need your help to raise enough funds to have her treated for heartworms and take care of her medical bill.
